Washing and handling natural fibres

Please handle fine textiles with the respect they deserve.

* Ecological cotton

Please wash garments of ecological cotton in the washing machine at 40 to 60°C with ecological laundry detergent. Do not spin dry. Shape the garment into it's form when damp and let dry on a clothesline. Iron from the reverse side, using the temperature for cotton.

* Wool and silk

The starting point in the care of Ruskovilla merino wool and silk garments is to understand that they do not need such frequent washing as cotton clothing. They do not become dirty as easily as some other materials; in fact they repel dirt.

Wool and silk like to be aired. They share the unique quality of renewal, they are capable of cleaning themselves with oxygen.

When you have two sets of woollen or silk underwear in a daily wearing and airing routine, they stay hygienic and fit for use for several days, often even for 2 to 3 weeks without washing.

It is commonly thought that garments become clean only at high temperatures. From the point of hygiene, wool and silk do not require washing by boiling - indeed, that would spoil them.
They are dirt-repellent and do not offer any culture medium for bacteria or spores.

It is important that you use a ecological laundry detergent which enhances dirt removal, for example olive laundry detergent, Marseille soap. Chemical detergents are harmful to wool and silk. In wool, they cause intertwining of fibres and felting. Silk does not felt, but the fibre does become hard.

It is recommended to wash woollen and silk garments by hand. Squeeze the garment lightly but avoid rubbing, rinse 2 to 3 times. If you use soap, it is advisable to add a drop of vinegar to the rinsing water to neutralise any lime remaining from the soap. Carefully squeeze the water out of the garment but avoid wringing, stretch the garment into its appropriate measurements lengthways. Spread it to dry but not in direct sunlight or close to an oven or other source of heat.

If you wish to wash them in a machine, you should prepare for shrinking by choosing a slightly larger size at the time of purchase. The garments of our Little Bear and FOREST collections tolerate machine washes well; please use a delicate wool wash programme. The garments shrink slightly in the first wash.

Our natural white woollen garments have not been non-felt processed, because felt protective substances are harmful to human health.

Moths and fur beetles

Moths and fur beetles which use wool as their source of nourishment are frequent visitors in urban conditions. Therefore, when you stop the frequent use of a woollen garment, keep it in a tightly closed bag. You can also deter moths and fur beetles by placing cedar rings in your wardrobe.

* Quilts Bedding and mattress

The best treatment for bed linen is light brushing and regularly ventilation. Wash with water is not suitable, because the upper layer (cotton) and wool wadding filling would require to purified various temperatures. Cotton washing temperature is not suitable for wool and wool wadding would get lumby when washing with water.

If stains occur, you can try to remove them locally with bile soap (SONETT). Rub dry stain with slightly wet soap, let that affect for an moment and rinse gently under running water.

You can get rid of mites from bed linen by keeping them at 60°C (in sauna examble) for a day, or leave them for one day at freezer at 18°C below zero.

Other cleaning: dry cleaning.

* Millet husk pillow

When the millet husk pillows cushion has been contaminated and cleaning is necessary, open the upper zipper and shake out the husk. Wash cushion at 40 -60°C, and fill up again with the same husk. Husks do not need to be washed, they can not attract moisture and odors. Change the husks every 5 -6 years. New husks are sold by kilo at our webstore.

*Sheepskin rug

Fan and shake out as often as possible. Brush fleece time by time, that way the wool fibers remain flexibility. Use sparse steel comb or brush. Grinders, small stains, vomit, etc. can be rinsed from fleece with running water. You don't need to wash entirely fleece.

When cleaning is necessary, the sheep fleece can be machine-washed with wool wash program 30°C. Use a wool wash laundry detergent. Spin gently. Hang the fleece from two corner, preferably outside. Fleece is a good stretch after washing before it is dried. Do not hang fleece near of heat source or at sun light.

NOTE! When the Fleece do contact with water, it behaves very naturally and wool fiber is coming sligthly curly. Appearance of the fleece will change slightly after washing, all its other characteristics remain the same.

IMPORTANT!
Wash the valuable wool and silk clothing with biological detergent, just as Sonett or Marseille soap. To select an correct detergent is great important. Synthetic detergents are often harmful to these fibers, although at the detergent packet is mention, that product is suitable for wool and other fine materials. Our product warranty does not cover wrong washed products. Protect clothing from moths and fur beetle.
